KlimaKlang

The project "Klima Klang” (Sound of Climate) is a transdisciplinary format that translates scientific data from ocean and climate research into music.

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time. Scientific data on temperature increases, CO2 emissions, changes in weather patterns, and other climate-relevant factors are crucial for understanding the scale and urgency of the issue. However, this data often remains abstract and difficult to grasp.

The project that was premiered at 6.12.2025 at Focke Museum in Bremen was realized as soundperformance / silent concert, combining music with visual elements. By employing the method of sonification - contextualised by the sound-ecology of the Wadden Sea - the piece conveys the influence of climate change for the ecosystem of the Wadden Sea in a powerful and accessible way. The goal was to make the topic of climate change tangible from a new perspective and to raise public awareness in museums or public spaces through the fusion of art and science.

The piece turns tidal data from the Sylt-Rømø-Belt into a sonic experience and takes the listener onto a journey of an imagined and possible future. The tides are the breath of the Wadden Sea ecosystem, which has adapted to the asynchronicity in time and of ebb and flood. The data from 10 curated sample points across the area are laid out in the 360 sonic sphere according to their physical position in the belt, putting the listener right in the middle of the tidal movement and dynamics. The piece starts in the current time and lets you witness how the projected change of these dynamics of sea surface height, current speed and asynchronicity and their impact on the transport of sediments or nutrients unfold in the future due to rising sea levels. The “future begins” quite literally in this piece that serves as a mirror to a possible future – not explaining it but letting the listener feel and experience the effects of the ongoing process of climate change on the Wadden Sea ecosystem.
